With B2E Consulting Principal for Development & CoachingSimon Rickman.

“When we listen and celebrate what is both common and different, we become a wiser, more inclusive, and better organization” Pat Wadors, Chief People Office, Procore

Mention the words ‘Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging’, and a lot of people go running to take cover! Indeed, this is a complex, sensitive, and emotional topic, and that is why too many people tend to avoid it. So, isn’t it better to discuss this important subject based on ‘curiosity’, rather than on ‘uncertainty’ or even ‘animosity’?

Most businesses largely accept that diversity matters to their organisation. There is ample evidence to demonstrate that it makes a positive difference to their results, such as a wider candidate pool, greater market share, and an increase in profitability. It also feels like the ‘ethical’ thing to do. Indeed, there is a plethora of research to show the positive effects this has on employees, customers, clients, and shareholders.

Simon Rickman is one of B2E’s Principal Consultants. He has put together a webinar to learn more about Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (DI&B) in a constructive way. He admits that he is not a DI&B ‘expert’ and is on his own journey to be more tolerant, open minded and knowledgeable. This webinar is therefore, for those people who are ‘curious’ to learn. Simon shares a range of insights, thoughts, and suggestions following his own research and by talking to DI&B experts.

During the pandemic, Simon has used the framework of ‘The 7 Habits’ by Stephen Covey to discuss a range of topics relevant for today’s working environment. In this series he focuses on how to

• Emphasise the importance of starting the DI&B conversation and sponsoring it as part of an organisation’s DNA

• Move the dialogue away from policy, structures, rules, and regulations and towards celebrating and valuing ‘difference’, as we are all individuals and bring unique things to the table

• Create an environment for employees to feel comfortable to share their views and be curious

The result (in the words of Paul Wolfe, SVP Global HR at Indeed) is, “to create a workplace where rich and incredible diversity is celebrated, and all employees can be their true, authentic selves”. Simon believes that this is one of the key skills required to reshape our working attitudes for 2021 and beyond.
