The engagement provided carbon emissions consultancy for a UK rail franchise development partnership. It focused on developing carbon baselines, net zero planning, and environmental action plans across rail operations.
Background
The engagement required development of the client's carbon baseline and trajectory, aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and collaboration with HS2 and industry partners.
The Challenge
The engagement needed to accurately define existing and predicted carbon emissions and develop a cohesive plan to achieve Net Zero 2050. It required alignment with existing work from AWC, Network Rail, and HS2, and integration of environmental considerations including air quality, noise, and vibration impacts across rail operations. The role also involved meeting contractual sustainability obligations and ensuring coordination across multiple stakeholders and environmental domains.
Our Approach
B2E developed carbon baseline and trajectory models, supporting definition of emissions and net zero planning. The team produced a Clean Air Action Plan aligned with National Rail Contract requirements and collaborated with partners on air quality monitoring and management, creating Noise and Vibration Action Plans to monitor and manage environmental impacts from rail operations. B2E supported delivery of Sustainability Obligation requirements within the HS2 scope and coordinated with stakeholders across AWC, Network Rail, and HS2.
Results
The engagement delivered carbon baseline and trajectory outputs, environmental action plans, and sustainability deliverables aligned to contractual requirements. It supported development of a structured pathway to Net Zero 2050 and improved alignment across stakeholders on environmental management and compliance.
