The value of “big data” and analytics is now well publicised. In many sectors, such as retail and finance, new sources of data and new analytical tools are transforming how businesses understand markets, service customers, and beat the competition. However, in sectors where most of the data are “old data” – e.g. utilities, energy and infrastructure – businesses are struggling to apply new tools, and extract new insights. This difficulty in turn makes them reluctant to explore new data sources.
